Housing Authority of the City of Camden Announces Youthbuild
Program
The Housing Authority of the City of Camden (HACC) announces
the beginning of its Youthbuild Program. The program will be aiding
young urban population that have been historically dismissed and
provide them with the resources needed in their desires toward self
sufficiency.
Unemployed inner city residents between the ages 17 to 21 will be
turning eight vacant properties to livable units assisting what could
be homeless families in this city to be properly housed.
The centerpiece of the HACC Youthbuild Program will
be at Branch Village where 30 youth will be introduced to the
construction industry by having them work on units that need to be
rehabilitated. Youthbuild also teaches the
educational, occupational, social, and leadership skills necessary to
become economically self-sufficient. Youthbuild
requires that students pursue their GED. The program will address the
academic, vocational, and employment needs. Committed to ensuring that
the participants complete a month long "Mental
Toughness" Curriculum, Youthbuild
instruction takes place in the classroom and site environments where
30 participants rotate bi-weekly. Instruction will measure and
evaluate performance. Students' individual educational plans will
include carpentry, power tool, machinery operation, foundation
construction, floor framing, exterior walls, ceilings, and roof
staging and finishing. The Housing Authority of the City of Camden
wants to see the youth take part in the rebuilding of their city as
well.
